All Sharingans in Naruto

Before One For All from Boku No Hero Academia and after Dragon Ball’s Kamehameha, the Sharingan existed. Some techniques and powers have already earned their place among legendary anime skills. And today we are going to talk about one more of them: the Sharingan, from Naruto . Learn about the different types and powers of the Uchiha clan’s famous dojutsu and even meet some of its main users.

Sharingan

1 - Sharingan

The Sharingan is the kekkei genkai dojutsu of the Uchiha clan, and is considered one of the Three Great Dojutsus.

Dojutsus are eye techniques that grant powers to their users and do not require seals to activate. The expression “Kekkei Genkai” means “technique limited to blood inheritance”. That is, this resource is transmitted in one bloodline, so each one develops only in one clan.

The Sharingan is one of the Three Great Dojutsus, along with the Byakugan and the Rinnegan. But since we’re going to focus on the Sharingan, we want to go into detail.

How is a Sharingan acquired or awakened?

2 - Sharingan

As a kekkei genkai dojutsu, the Sharingan can only be awakened in members of the Uchiha clan. Therefore, it is necessary for the future user to feel an extremely powerful and painful emotion, which, for example, can be the stress of witnessing the death of a loved one.

This emotional shock causes the Uchiha’s brain to release a special chakra that affects the optic nerves and awakens the Sharingan. For this reason, Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage, referred to the Sharingan as “the eye that reflects feelings”.

However, there is one more way in which someone who is not from the Uchiha clan can acquire the Sharingan: the transplant. In the event that an Uchiha transplants his eye to another ninja, the new user has no way to disable the Sharingan and needs to use something to cover the eye to save chakra by using his resources.

3 - Sharingan

If the Sharingan donor Uchiha is still alive, it is possible that he and the recipient of the eye share the ability to see what the other sees to some degree.

An Uchiha can also transplant other Sharingans, by donation or even by theft. And both one of the clan and a ninja of another lineage can “accumulate” more than two different Sharingans. Danzo Shimura, for example, even had ten, keeping them sealed until he needed to use them.

sharingan powers

4 - Sharingan

Literally, “Sharingan” means “Copying Rotating Eye”. The powers that the resource grants to its user fall into two categories:

  • Eye of Perception: The Eye of Perception is the ability to see the flow of chakra. However, this ability gives the Sharingan user several other resources, such as noticing if the opponent is under a genjutsu or clearly predicting his next move.
  • Eye of Hypnotism: It is about clarity of perception. With the Sharingan, the user can not only see the flow of chakra, but can also understand it. From this, the owner of the Sharingan can recognize different forms of chakra, predict genjutsu , read lips, and even see through barriers such as mist. Additionally, he can make his opponent perform actions or have thoughts through a genjutsu cast by eye contact.
  • From these abilities, the Sharingan user can even copy all the genkai no kekkei techniques of another clan, memorizing ninjutsus, taijutsus, and genjutsus with precision and ease.

It’s also worth noting that the Sharingan can evolve based on its user. In addition to gaining a new tomoe (the mark on the eye), the Sharingan has its powers and intensity amplified. An advanced Sharingan user can even control a Tailed Beast with his hypnosis ability. In addition, there are genjutsus with which it is possible to confuse, paralyze, create illusions and reproduce memories of the opponent, as we will see below.

What is Izanagi and Izanami?

5-Izanagi e Izanami

These two powerful genjutsus have their use involved in controversy due to the results they produce, being able to change the user’s destiny or force him to decide this destiny.

  • Izanagi: This genjutsu is cast by the Sharingan user on himself. Its use breaks down the barriers between reality and illusion in the user’s personal space. From there, he can turn reality into illusion and illusion into reality, reversing injuries and even death itself. Only true ninjas from the Uchiha and Senju clan (who come from the same lineage) can use this technique.
  • Izanami: This technique originated in response to Izanagi’s abusive use. This genjutsu traps the victim in an almost infinite loop of the same memory. By forcing her to relive that moment, Izanami intends for the affected person to accept her fate and stop using Izanagi.

Using any of these genjutsus causes the eye/Sharingan used to close, losing its sight and its use forever.

Sharingan users in Naruto

5 - Sharingan

The group of ninja who developed the Sharingan in Naruto includes several of the registered Uchihas, members of the Ōtsutsuki Clan (ancestors of the Uchihas), and shinobi who acquired the dojutsu through transplantation. They are:

Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki

First ninja to develop the Sharingan in the anime.

Indra Ōtsutsuki

Hagoromo’s son and the first ninja to develop the Sharingan in the manga.

Fugaku Uchiha

Leader of the Uchiha clan and father of Itachi and Sasuke, Fugaku has mastered the known abilities of the Sharingan, such as seeing chakra flow and using it to predict opponents’ attacks and plan their strikes.

Itachi Uchiha

His precocious talent earned him recognition as “Itachi of the Sharingan”. Itachi awakened his Sharingan at age eight and quickly mastered his powers. As an adult, he is able to predict blows and make them turn on the opponent who threw them. He can perform the complex and dangerous Izanami and Izanagi techniques.

Sasuke Uchiha

With a Sharingan more powerful than that of his brother Itachi, even though he had not yet fully developed the resource, he became known as “Sasuke of the Sharingan”. With advanced use of the feature, Sasuke can split information and erase memories in his opponents’ subconscious.

Madara Uchiha

He obtained his Sharingan in childhood, which meant that he already had a broad grasp of his powers as an adult. Madara was able to gather information and paralyze the opponent with just a glance, as well as being able to catch and summon the Nine-Tails. He used Izanagi to change reality and come back to life.

Izuna Uchiha

Madara’s brother Izuna also developed his Sharingan at a young age. The anime does not reveal much about the ninja’s use of the Sharingan, although he mastered the already recognized skills of the dojutsu.

Obito Uchiha

6 - Obito Uchiha

Obito is one of the few ninjas who keeps his Sharingan permanently activated and without losing chakra because of it, given the intensity of his dominance over him. With his different abilities, he is able to control the actions of his opponents. He could also perform Izanagi and Izanami’s techniques.

Shisui Uchiha

His Sharingan abilities were comparable to Itachi’s, being able to defeat countless strong warriors solely by employing Sharingan powers and techniques.

Kagami Uchiha

There are no important records of his use of the Sharingan. It is known, however, that he mastered the basic abilities of the resource.

Sarada Uchiha

Sasuke’s daughter awakened her Sharingan when she was only 11 years old. Since then, she has mastered the powers of dojutsu , being able to identify and copy the techniques of her opponents. The development of the third tomoe of her Sharingan gave her the ability of microscopic vision.

Tajima Uchiha

There are few details on Tajima’s use of the Sharingan, however, the ninja’s power on the battlefield was comparable to that of his powerful rival Butsuma Senju.

Tekka Uchiha

Part of the Konoha Military Police, Tekka was a skilled ninja, both with his jutsu and the capabilities of his Sharingan.

Yashiro Uchiha

He mastered his Sharingan well and the resource’s basic abilities, such as predicting and copying opponents’ techniques.

New Uchiha

He only appears in the anime. Baru mastered the Sharingan skillfully and was able to perform the Izanagi technique.

Kakashi Hatake

7-Kakashi Hatake

Kakashi received the Sharingan from his old battle partner, Obito Uchiha, when the two of them were very young. Since then, the skills he has developed with dojutsu have earned him recognition as one of the most powerful ninjas in his village.

Naka Uchiha

Featured only in the anime, Naka was one of five ninjas capable of performing the complex Izanagi technique.

Rai Uchiha

Also featured only in the anime, Rai had already lost sight in one of his eyes from employing Izanagi’s technique.

Hikaku Uchiha

He mastered the recognized abilities of the Sharingan well.

Inabi Uchiha

He had a good command of the Sharingan and was known for his large amounts of chakra.

Naori Uchiha

Although he only appeared in the anime, Naori was one of the Uchihas with the greatest mastery of the Sharingan, being able to perform the risky Izanami technique.

Setsuna Uchiha

He was also a member of the Konoha Military Police and mastered the Sharingan’s abilities with skill.

Izumi Uchiha

Although he awakened his Sharingan, he was never able to develop the amount of chakra that was needed to use it effectively. He passed out every time he tried to use it.

Black Zetsu

8-Black Zetsu

While helping Madara, Black Zetsu stole the Rinnegan (another form of Sharingan we’ll talk about later) from Obito Uchiha. Additionally, Madara implanted Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan into Black Zetsu.

Danzo Shimura

Danzo stole Shisui Uchiha’s and Shin Uchiha’s Sharingan, as well as having another ten Sharingan embedded in his arm. He was able to use the Izanagi forbidden technique to change his fate and not die.

Shin Uchiha

One of Orochimaru’s experimental subjects, Shin received several organ and tissue transplants. After becoming obsessed with the Uchiha clan, he took on the family name and even transplanted numerous Sharingans into his body. His arm was eventually transplanted into Danzo Shimura.

Mangeky Sharingan

9 - Mangekyou Sharingan

This evolution of the Sharingan provides its user with an enhanced version of the abilities of said ability, and other powerful techniques. Known as “heavenly eyes that see the truth of all creation unobstructed”, the Mangekyo Sharingan can awaken the same technique in both of the user’s eyes. However, it is also possible and recurring for a user to awaken different techniques in each eye.

It is also worth noting that when the user develops different powers in each eye of the Mangekyo Sharingan, it is possible for one eye to transfer techniques to another eye and activate it only when needed.

Another curious detail of the Mangekyo Sharingan is that it differs from the normal Sharingan also because of its appearance. While the Sharingan has the same shape in all its users, with variations only in the number of tomoe , the Mangekyo Sharingan has a unique appearance for each user.

How to awaken or acquire the Mangekyo Sharingan

10 - Mangekyou Sharingan Sasuke

In order to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan, the ninja must first have awakened the Sharingan. The function’s evolution to its Mangekyo version occurs when the user is exposed to the emotion of losing a very close person.

Unfortunately, many Uchihas confused how to evolve their power and reach the Mangekyo Sharingan, thinking that in order to awaken this version of the dojutsu it was necessary for the user to kill someone nearby.

Like the Sharingan, the Mangekyo Sharingan can be transplanted into a non-Uchiha ninja. However, if this ninja from another lineage already had a Sharingan, it is also possible that he awakened the evolution of it, as happened with Kakashi Hatake.

Eterno’s Mangeky Sharingan

11 - Mangeky Sharingan Eterno

Using the Mangekyo Sharingan causes high pressure in its user’s eye, which will eventually affect their eyesight to the point of blindness. However, there is a way around this: transplant another pair of Mangekyo Sharingan from a close relative. The fusion of the two Mangekyo Sharingan is called the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.

After a few days of recovery, the ninja with the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan not only regains his sight, but also fuses the powers of his Mangekyo Sharingan with those of his donor. However, it is worth noting that Mangekyo Sharingan compatibility is rare. So far only Madara and Sasuke have achieved a successful Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.

Meaning, powers and users of the Mangekyo Sharingan

12-Mangekyou Sharingan Itachi

The literal meaning of “Mangekyo Sharingan” is “Kaleidoscopic Rotating Copying Eye”. The powers it grants users vary from ninja to ninja. Discover some of these variations:

Itachi Uchiha

Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan provided him with the ability to perform three powerful techniques:

  • Amaterasu: Through this ninjutsu , Itachi could create black flames capable of reducing opponents to ashes.
  • Tsukuyomi: This genjutsu distorts a person’s perception of time. It can be used to torture the opponent’s psyche, making them feel the pain of a day of torture in a matter of seconds. Itachi, however, used it to give a more merciful death to one of his family members during the Uchiha massacre. Before he killed her, he made her “live” the life she dreamed of and she felt as if he had lived it.
  • Susanoo: Summons a kind of entity, a giant warrior that fights by your side on the battlefield.

Sasuke Uchiha

Sasuke awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan after the shock of finding out the truth about the Uchiha massacre and his brother Itachi’s motivations. He acquired the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan by transplanting Itachi’s Mangekyo Sharingan into himself, some time after his brother’s death. His abilities are:

  • Amaterasu: With his left eye, Sasuke is able to create and command black flames with even more prowess than Itachi ever demonstrated.
  • Paralyze: With a genjutsu launched from his right eye, he can paralyze the opponent.
  • Susanoo: After awakening the powers of both his eyes, Sasuke became one of the few ninjas capable of summoning the entity Susanoo to fight by his side.

Obito Uchiha

Obito’s Mangekyo Sharingan granted him the ability to perform Kamui, a technique where he could teleport his opponents into a personal dimension. This contact with other dimensions also provided him with the characteristic of intangibility. That’s because he could transport parts of his body to another dimension and, with that, pass through objects or avoid being hit.

A curiosity about Obito’s Mangekyo Sharingan is that when he acquired it, Kakashi also developed the evolved version of the dojutsu. That’s because he had Obito’s left eye. After Obito’s death, Kakashi ended up inheriting his chakra and his two Sharingans from him. Since then, he can also summon Susanoo.

Madara Uchiha

13 - Madara Uchiha

The Izuna and Madara brothers were the first Uchihas to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan. After Izuna’s death, Madara transplanted his brother’s eyes. From this, he regained his dojutsu -affected eyesight and developed the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. Among the abilities that he possessed, Madara was one of the few ninjas capable of summoning Susanoo.

Shisuui Uchiha

Among the powerful techniques provided by Shisui’s Mangekyo Sharingan, it is worth mentioning Kotoamatsukami’s genjutsu . Through this resource, the ninja was able to manipulate the thoughts of his opponent without the target being able to perceive this manipulation. In addition, the technique could be performed without eye contact and even with the eye hidden. He was also able to summon Susanoo, calling the powerful entity to fight by his side.

Shin Uchiha

Shin’s right eye could perform an object manipulation technique by telekinesis. In addition, he was able to use the space-time Kamui ninjutsu , being able to teleport himself and others close to him at any time.

Rinnegan (is the Rinnegan a Sharingan?)

14 - Rinnegan

Officially speaking, no, the Rinnegan is not a Sharingan. The Rinnegan is one of the Three Great Dojutsus, along with the Sharingan and the Byakugan. However, the Rinnegan has the same origin as the Sharingan, the Rinne Sharingan (which we’ll talk about later). Also, the dojutsu can be achieved as an evolution of the Sharingan, so we need to talk about it before we continue.

The Rinnegan is also a kekkei genkai dojutsu, but instead of belonging to the Uchihas, it belongs to the Otsutsuki clan, ancestors of the Uchiha Clan. This is another reason for the strong connection between the Rinnegan and the Sharingan. Besides the true members of the Otsutsuki family, only two other ninja have awakened the Rinnegan: Madara and Sasuke. And they both acquired dojutsu as a “third evolution of the Sharingan”. Basically the process was as follows: Sharingan > Mangekyo Sharingan > Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan > Rinnegan.

According to legend, whoever wields the Rinnegan in times of war can become one of two things: “God of Creation” or “God of Destruction”. By choosing his fate, the user of the dojutsu will be able to bring peace to the world or destroy it entirely, given the extent of the power he wields.

How to awaken or acquire the Rinnegan

15 - Rinnegan

Possessing an Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, Madara was only able to convert his dojutsu into a Rinnegan by implanting himself with Hashirama Senju’s DNA. Still, it took her a few years for the experiment to achieve the desired result.

Sasuke, on the other hand, received the powers of the dojutsu and half of the chakra from Hagoromo Otsutsuki. From there, the young Uchiha was able to awaken the Rinnegan.

Aparte de Sasuke y Madara, solo Hagoromo Otsutsuki, Momoshiki Otsutsuki, Urashiki Otsutsuki y la bestia de Diez Colas son capaces de usar el Rinnegan.

Meaning and powers of Rinnegan

16 - Rinnegan

Also known as the “Eye of Transmigration”, the Rinnegan allows its user to see and identify any form of chakra, recognize code patterns, and decipher and understand different languages. For this reason, only Rinnegan wielders can read the Uchiha clan’s stone tablet.

The dimension of Rinnegan users’ power also comes from the fact that they can use any ninjutsu and master the five basic nature transformations. But the Rinnegan’s greatest power revolves around the set of abilities known as the Six Paths Technique:

  • Deva Path: Provides gravitational powers
  • Preta Path: unlimited chakra absorption power
  • Animal Path: ability to summon different animals.
  • Asura Path: ability to transform body parts into weapons
  • Human Path: power to extract souls
  • Naraka Path: access to the King of Hell
  • There is also a seventh power known as the Outer Path, capable of controlling life and death and raising the dead.

Who are the Rinnegan users in Naruto?

17 - Rinnegan

As we said before, there are some members of the Otsutusuki family who developed the Rinnegan. However, as the focus here is on the types of Sharingan, and in this case the connection between the Rinnegan and the Sharingan, we will highlight only two users: Madara and Sasuke.

Madara Uchiha

To awaken Rikudo’s Rinnegan it is necessary to combine the chakra of Hagoromo Otsutsuki’s children: Indra and Asura. And how did Madara do it? The truth is that Madara is the reincarnation of Indra. And she was infused with the DNA of Hashirama Senju, the reincarnation of Asura. In this way, years after the procedure, she managed to make her Sharingan become a Rinnegan.

The extent of his power was only understood after he implanted his two Rinnegans into Nagato, who ended up becoming Pain and using the Six Paths Technique while leading the criminal organization Akatsuki.

Sasuke Uchiha

After Hashirama Senju, Sasuke was the reincarnation of Indra Otsutsuki. His predisposition to awaken the Rinnegan was coupled with the moment he received half of Hagoromo Otsutsuki’s spiritual powers.

With the Rinnegan in his left eye, the young Uchiha was able to perform the Ame-no-Tejikara technique. From the application of it, he was able to move any object in space-time. Sasuke also excels at using the Rinnegan by being able to combine the dojutsu with his Mangekyo Sharingan. With this, he can use powers such as creating black flames, opening portals, and using genjutsu at the same time.

Rinne Sharingan

18 - Rinne Sharingan

Origin of the Sharingan and Rinnegan, this dojutsu first manifested in Kaguya Otsutsuki. By eating a fruit from the God Tree, Kaguya awakened the Rinne Sharingan, causing a third eye to open on his forehead.

In terms of appearance, the third eye appears to be upright and joins the Rinnegan’s wave pattern with the tomoe (in this case, nine) typical of the Sharingan.

How to awaken the Rinne Sharingan and its users

19 - Rinne Sharingan

As mentioned, Kaguya awakened the Rinne Sharingan after consuming a fruit from the God Tree. Madara Uchiha, on the other hand, achieved the feat of developing the Rinne Sharingan the moment he retrieves his two Rinnegans (previously transplanted into Nagato/Pain).

In order to awaken dojutsu , he used his Rinnegans to read the instructions on the Uchiha clan’s stone tablet and became the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails. The next step was to get closer to the Moon, and Madara awakened the Rinne Sharingan.

Rinne Sharingan meaning and powers

20 - Rinne Sharingan

The literal meaning of “Rinne Sharingan” is “Copy of Saṃsāra’s revolving eye”. In addition to possessing the eye power of the Sharingan, the dojutsu stands out for the Infinite Tsukuyoṃi technique. Through this genjutsu cast on the Moon, the user of the Rinne Sharingan can teleport multiple people and himself to alternate dimensions.

The effects of this powerful genjutsu can only be nullified with a Rinnegan.
