They are the main antagonists of the second part of the Naruto anime . The feared Akatsuki organization is characterized by iconic characters, a highly complex story, and twists that left many fans stumped. This article features major spoilers for different Naruto Shippuden episodes. These spoilers are flagged, but we suggest proceeding to the article with caution if you haven’t finished the series yet.
Nagato was one of the creators of the Akatsuki group, along with Konan and Yahiko. The initial objective of the group, in its first formation, was to combat the tyranny and oppression that the Amegakure village was being subjected to during the Third Shinobi World War.
Before founding the organization, the three were known as the Ame Orphans, children whose parents died in the Shenobi World War II. They were found by Jiraiya, received care and training for three years, and gained a reputation for killing anyone who opposed them.
As the Akatsuki gained strength, Amegakure’s political leader Hanzo felt threatened and tried to stop them. He kidnapped Konan and demanded that Nagato kill his friend and then the Akatsuki leader Yahiko in exchange for Konan’s freedom. To prevent Nagato from having to make that decision, Yahiko jumped on his partner’s gun and killed himself to save Konan.
Nagato’s transformation and the six paths of Pain
The ensuing battle and Konan’s rescue cost Nagato the movement of her legs, burned by Hanzo’s explosive seals. In the midst of all of this, he awakened the Rinnegan in him and used Summon: Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, a technique by which he killed all of Hanzo’s men. The technique, however, had a side effect that impaled Nagato with several chakra spikes.
From this side effect, Nagato developed the Six Paths Pain technique, with which he used his Rinnegan to pierce the corpses of six warriors, then manipulated them as if they were his own body. One is the body of Yahiko, who came to represent the Path of Deva.
Although he can use all six bodies at the same time, Nagato usually assumes the physical identity of Yahiko’s body. Since then, he began to identify himself as Pain. When he was younger, Nagato was sensitive, insecure, scared and traumatized just by the thought of having to kill other people. However, like Pain, his personality changed and he became more calm, distant and serious.
Akatsuki’s new target
After Yahiko’s death, Nagato assumed leadership of Akatsuki as Pain, but the goal was no longer to ensure peace, but to achieve world domination. To do so, they gathered the Bijū (Tailed Beasts), to use their powers to start wars. Soon after, they used the new mercenary ninja lineup to end the war, guaranteeing reputation and pay, causing some villages to collapse financially.
Pain’s lunatic plan was to make Akatsuki the only great shinobi force in existence, capable of creating kinjutsu, with Bijū chakra, strong enough to defeat a war in minutes. That way, through fear, there would be peace. Under Pain’s command, the second Akatsuki formation went on to seal seven of the nine Bijū prior to the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Having the eyes of Madara Uchiha and the genes of Senju, Nagato was able to use the legendary Rinnegan, a dōjutsu possessed by Rikudō Sennin, the world’s first shinobi and founder of ninjutsu. This made it possible for Nagato to learn to master the five basic transformations of nature when he was a child, something unprecedented.
It was also through him that Nagato was able to develop the Six Paths of Pain technique, in which he is able to control six different bodies, having separated the abilities between the corpses, each one representing a path. Are:
- Deva Path: Manipulation of attractive and repulsive forces;
- Asura Path: Creation of mechanical limbs, weapons and armor;
- Human path: Who has the ability to remove souls and read minds;
- Animal Path: Able to summon various creatures;
- Black path – with the ability to absorb chakra;
- Naraka Path: Can summon and control the King of Hell;
- Outer path: seventh path, it is Nagato himself, who rules life and death.
Third member of the group known as the Love Orphans (three children whose parents died in Kenochi of World War II). Konan trained with Jiraiya, along with his friends Nagato and Yahiko, and founded Akatsuki with them, integrating the first and second formations.
Clever and stoic, she sided with Nagato even though she didn’t agree with all of his actions, though she did embrace the ultimate goal of achieving peace. She was able to read Nagato’s emotions, even after her transformation into Pain, Konan trusted her judgment, and that remained when…
…he trusted that Naruto Uzumaki knew the best way to bring about world peace and sacrificed himself to resurrect all the lives that had been lost in the Akatsuki invasions. Since then, Konan fiercely protects Naruto.
Konan ends up becoming the leader of the Amegakure village.
Konan is an S rank Kunoichi and has a natural talent for origami, developing different techniques for which she makes use of paper.
- Shikigami Dance: Konan transforms her body and clothes into thousands of sheets of paper, controlling as she pleases, either making them lighter and more streamlined to travel distances, transforming them into weapons, or suffocating enemies by covering them with paper.
- Paper Clones: Clones created from paper can fight in your place.
- God Person Paper Technique: Konan’s most powerful jutsu, the technique gathers 600 billion explosive seals whose explosion, which can last up to ten minutes, is capable of splitting a lake.
A prodigy of the Uchiha clan of Konohagakure, Itachi became an internationally wanted criminal after murdering every member of his clan, with the exception of his younger brother, Sasuke. The young man joined the second Akatsuki formation.
During this period, the goal of the organization, now under Pain’s leadership, had changed. Although they still sought world peace, the means by which they attempted to achieve it were contradictory to say the least. With mercenary ninjas as its members, Akatsuki secretly caused wars in different villages, just to “save” the villages, collect money, and gain reputation.
Pain’s intention, however, was to unite all the Tailed Beasts to form a shinobi force so powerful that enemies would be afraid of starting wars, which could lead the country to achieve peace. Itachi continued to side with Pain until the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Itachi’s revelation in the Fourth War
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Itachi turns against Akatsuki’s plans and reveals that his main goal has always been to protect Konoha and Sasuke. The decision to annihilate the Uchiha clan, in fact, was to protect the country and his younger brother from the possible consequences of the coup that his family wanted to carry out.
Thinking that it would guide Sasuke to a better path as a ninja, Itachi creates his persona as a villain. His entry into Akatsuki was even to maintain that image and keep his watch on the organization to protect Konoha.
During the war, Itachi lets Naruto deal with Pain and goes to fight alongside Sasuke to stop Kabuto. At a certain point, he passes on his memories of him to his brother to explain to her why he did everything he did.
A prodigious ninja, Itachi has always shown great skill in taijutsu. Some of his powers were:
- Ninjutsu: His ninjutsu allowed him to summon ravens, which he managed to use to fight opponents in different ways.
- Shurikenjutsu: technique of throwing weapons by surprise such as shuriken (to which Itachi could add fire), kunai and senbon.
- Fire Throw: Itachi mastered the Great Fireball technique.
- Water Throw: Can use the Water Dragon Projectile Technique.
- Genjutsu: Itachi can engage opponents in extremely realistic illusions. These illusions can still be used to share information.
- Mangekyō Sharingan: With his left eye, Itachi can use Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu capable of trapping the enemy’s mind in the world of illusions. With the right, he can use Amaterasu, through which he burns everything he looks at.
One of the most mysterious members of Akatsuki, Tobi was always seen wearing an orange mask with spiral patterns that completely covered his face. He was accepted into the organization to replace Sasori and be Deidara’s new partner.
He accompanied the group to the Fourth Shinobi World War, when his identity was finally revealed. For this reason, information about Tobi’s identity and powers are spoilers.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Tobi finally reveals his true identity, shocking everyone present: he was Obito Uchiha.
When he was younger, Obito was known for his kindness. Right now, his dream was to save the world and become Hokage. Although his ideals and principles were very similar to Naruto’s, he unfortunately ended up taking a different path. Motivated by the destruction of his idealism after the death of the woman he loved, he succumbed to the Curse of Hate that accompanied the Uchiha clan.
Reported dead after the Third Shinobi World War, he was actually saved by Madara Uchiha, who trained him as a successor and even passed him the Eye of the Moon Plan. The world domination plan was intended to use the Bijū chakras together, with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, to recreate the Ten-Tails, the personification of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki.
In order to accomplish this, Obito/Tobi manipulated the Akatsuki members early on, resulting in the Fourth Shinobi World War. During the war, Obito was able to develop his own Six Paths of Pain, but using deceased jinchūriki (humans who had beasts with sealed tails). However, at the end of the war, Obito realized that he had taken the wrong path and sacrificed himself to help save the world from all that he caused.
Although in his childhood and youth Obito displayed average powers, under Madara’s guidance he became an extremely powerful warrior, capable of fighting Naruto, Killer B, Guy and Kakashi at the same time.
After being seriously injured during a mission in Kusagakure, Obito was taken care of by Madara, who coated him with the same substance White Zetsus are made of. As a result, Obito’s chakra reserves grew and he was able to tap into Harishama Senju’s DNA. He also gained the ability to heal quickly, the ability to replace limbs, and the ability to use Wood Release.
In addition to using the Uchiha clan’s natural fire release, Obito could use the technique in conjunction with his Mangekyō Sharingan to create the Fire Release: Blast Wave Wild Dance. The Mangekyō Sharingan, in turn, allows him to create a kind of entrance to another dimensional space, where he can transport himself.
Zetsu is the being originated from the union of White Zetsu and Black Zetsu. The White Zetsu is a human being artificially created from the DNA of Hashirama Senju, founder of Konoha along with Madara Uchida and first Hokage. The Black Zetsu, on the other hand, was created by Kaguya Otsutsuki for the sole purpose of ensuring his own rebirth.
For this reason, the serious and obedient Black Zetsu turned his allegiance only to Kaguya, though he feigned allegiance to Madara, while considering anyone with powers below him to be utterly useless. His goal, even in Akatsuki, was to influence the shinobi world to allow Kaguya’s revival.
In Akatsuki, Zetsu’s role was to spy and obtain information, as well as being tasked with eating the bodies of slain members, to prevent their secrets from being discovered. Zetsu was also responsible for retrieving the rings of the dead members.
The Black Zetsu has the ability to bond with other people, control their bodies, and even use their abilities. Therefore, his range of powers varies depending on the opponents he has access to. He can also record the events that he sees and show those memories to anyone.
The White Zetsu, on the other hand, because his genetic material is nearly identical to Hashirama Senju’s, he can use wood release, but at a weaker level than the first Hokage.
As Zetsu, he can use ephemeral ninjutsu, through which he can merge with the earth and thus travel great distances at great speed.
Originally from Iwagakure, Deidara was an S-rank nukenin. When he was younger, he dedicated his life to helping rebels from different countries. His reputation spread to the members of the second Akatsuki formation, leading to Deidara receiving an invitation to join the organization directly from Itachi Uchiha, Kisame Hoshigaki, and Sasori, under Pain’s orders.
Proud and vain about his artistic fighting techniques, he harbored a great hatred for Itachi Uchiha and Sasuke Uchiha, both because they showed no emotions for their art, and because they both had the Sharingan, considered by Deidara to be an art more powerful than his own.
Viewed with great acclaim within the Akatsuki, and by Pain himself, Deidara’s abilities included kinjutsu, which allowed him to create special mouths on his hands and chest; and the explosive clay from it, which could be shaped however the user of it wanted. Among the resources that Deidara could provide using his clay were explosives for ranged attacks, clones of himself, and birds for transportation.
Due to a lonely childhood with no warmth from his parents, Sasori grew up as a sad young man and gradually became an emotionless person. The love for art, which he learned from his grandmother, was also shared with Deidara, hers being his first partner in Akatsuki.
Fascinated by the puppet theatre, he had the ambition, for a long time, to become a puppet himself, seeing in art something to leave for the future. He gradually succeeded, turning his body into a kind of human puppet, to maintain his physique and abilities, equipping himself with weapons and different battle resources.
Initially, he teamed up with Orochimaru, who betrayed him after leaving and attempted to steal Itachi Uchiha’s body, but failed.
Extremely powerful, Sasori even had over 300 dolls in his personal collection. Considered a master puppeteer, Sasori was highly experienced in long-distance combat and his puppets were feared on the battlefield.
In addition to the dolls he created himself, Sasori could control people to live as one of his puppets, as long as he had managed to weaken them enough. That way, he could have access to the abilities of the people he controlled.
Like Tsunade and Jiraya, Orochimaru was one of Konohagakure’s legendary Sannin. However, the unethical experiments he began to do with other people to achieve his longed for immortality caused him to be persecuted.
Orochimaru deserted Konoha and went in search of conquering eternal life, to have time to learn all the secrets of the world. Shortly after leaving the village, he joined the second Akatsuki formation as a criminal organization. Although he was still Sasori’s partner, his goal in the group was to obtain the Sharingan by stealing Itachi Uchiha’s body. After his plan failed, he left the team.
Despite fueling a great deal of anger for his hometown, this feeling was still not comparable to the hatred he felt for his former Akatsuki colleagues.
Orochimaru is one of the most powerful shinobi in history. The experiments he performed on his own body in search of immortality gave him superhuman powers, speed, and strength. His transformations reached the extreme of being able to take the form of a large white snake made up of several smaller snakes.
Capable of using various ninjutsus, he can still use all five nature transformations and Yin and Yang Release. His affinity for snakes allowed him to develop different attacks, such as summoning giant snakes.
Originally from Yugakure, Hidan is an S-rank nukenin who stood out as one of the most disrespectful characters in anime and Akatsuki, constantly complaining and cursing at everyone, including their leader, Pain, whom he also showed no respect for. He had great contempt for his partner in the organization, Kakuzu, but fought well alongside him and was concerned when he accidentally nearly killed him.
He was a sadist who enjoyed killing as painfully as he could imagine, and viewed murder as a religious calling. With an air of madness, he was extremely spiteful and vindictive.
As a consequence of his extensive experiences with jutsu in the Jashin religion, Hidan achieved semi-immortality, resisting any kind of injury in battle, but could still suffer from lack of nourishment.
In addition to being extremely skilled in taijutsu with his Triple Sickle, Hidan is capable of using the terrible Jashin Ritual. Through this technique, for which he draws the Jashin symbol on the ground using the opponent’s blood, he creates a connection with his enemy’s body, using his own body as a kind of voodoo. That is, everything he does to his body, including painful and deadly wounds, the enemy will feel too.
With a body made up of hundreds of threads, Kakuzu could separate his body parts as he wished and use them in ranged attacks. He also uses his parts to pierce enemies and steal organs. Usually, with five hearts, he needs to “be killed” five times to actually die.
An S-rank Nikegin, Kisame was known in Kirigakure as the Monster Hidden in the Mist. He was one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist in his village, until he joined Akatsuki, where he was a partner of Itachi Uchiha and stood out as one of the strongest members of the organization.
He had great respect for Itachi, following his instructions and always consulting him. Cruel and violent, he had no problem mutilating his victims, either to torture them or simply for convenience.
Traumatized by his own master’s betrayal at the time he was part of the Secret Intelligence Squad, Kisame believed that keeping secrets was even more important than saving lives. For this reason, he commits suicide when he is captured, to prevent them from extracting any information from him.
Highly talented in taijutsu, Kisame preferred direct physical combat, in which he displayed great speed and physical strength. Still, he had a monstrous amount of chakra, comparable to the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox.
A powerful swordsman, Kisame’s signature weapon was the Samehada sword, a sentient being capable of sensing and absorbing chakra. He was also able to fully merge with the sword, greatly increasing his power and taking on the appearance of a shark, as well as gills that allowed him to breathe underwater.
Itachi’s first partner in Akatsuki, shortly after the Uchiha clan massacre, Jūzō joined the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist in Kirigakure before joining the organization. In this period, he acquired the giant and deadly sword Kubikiribōchō, capable of regenerating from the iron he obtained from the blood of his victims.
His reputation distinguishes him only by his inhuman brutality. In Akatsuki, he was extremely loyal to Pain, showing professionalism in his missions and always trying to work in harmony with his partner. Nurturing a growing hatred for his homeland, he hated having to fulfill a mission in the Land of Water.
Extremely skilled and violent, Jūzō was a great user of kenjutsu, as well as being a user of Water Release, a technique whereby he created clones of water and dense mist that could be used to his advantage in battle.
What are the Akatsuki?
Nagato (Pain), Yahiko y Konan, fundadores de Akatsuki
Although Akatsuki gained more recognition in his second formation, the main antagonist of the second part of the anime, the organization had an extremely different beginning. Created by Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan, Akatsuki had the original goal of bringing about peace by ending the wars that plagued Amegakure.
Yahiko’s death and Nagato’s manipulation would completely change the group’s goal.
Akatsuki’s Secret Goals
Under the leadership of Nagato/Pain, Akatsuki was made up of mercenary ninjas, who were paid to try and stop village wars. However, to gain money and reputation, it was Akatsuki herself who secretly caused these wars which they were later paid to stop.
During this period, Pain’s real goal was to gather all the Bijū (Tailed Beasts) to make the Akatsuki such a large shinobi force, that it would immediately win wars and thus bully nations into starting other conflicts. . However, there was another secret objective during this period, which was carried out without Pain’s knowledge.
Since the beginning of the second Akatsuki formation, Obito Uchiha, under the identity of Tobi, manipulated Nagato into capturing the nine Bijū. His true goal, and that of his master Madara, was to use the Bijū chakras together with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to recreate the Ten Tails, the personification of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, being himself, Obito, the Jinchūriki (bearer of the Ten Tails). ).
Although Obito manipulated Yahiko and Nagato so that Akatsuki got to where he got, the one who began to manipulate everyone in reality was the Black Zetsu. The creation of Akatsuki, with the different goals from him, had always been Black Zetsu’s plan to use the nine Bijū as a way to bring Kaguya Ōtsutsuki back; purpose for which he was created.
The members of the 1st formation
In addition to Nagato (before becoming Pain) and Konan, already detailed above, the first Akatsuki formation had the following members:
Along with Nagato and Konan, Yahiko was one of the founders of Akatsuki, leader of the 1st formation, and the strongest representative of the group’s initial goal: to achieve peace and prevent further wars in Amegakure. Like Naruto, Yahiko dreamed of one day becoming the leader of his village or even the world, always aiming to stop all wars.
But that doesn’t mean that Yahiko’s methods of achieving his goals were peaceful. He was one of Ame’s orphans, children who lost their parents in Shenobi in World War II. Yahiko trained with Jiraiya for three years and did not measure the consequences to reach Akatsuki’s goal.
After Yahiko died in the ambush of Hanzo, the ruler of Amegakure, his body was incorporated into the Six Paths of Pain, a technique devised by Nagato, through which he managed to use his friend’s body as a receiver, assuming the identity of Pain.
Yahiko was able to use water release techniques, such as the Wild Water Wave, through which he projected a strong jet of water from his mouth. Also, as the Deva Path, he provided Nagato/Pain with the ability to control rain.
As one of the Six Paths of Pain, considered the strongest of them, Yahiko’s power was also manifested by the ability to repel or attract objects. The Chibaku Tensei technique creates a sphere of energy that attracts all matter around it.
One of the first warriors to join Akatsuki, apart from its three founders, Daibutsu has always been strongly dedicated to the organization’s primary goal of achieving world peace.
When Daibutsu realizes that the meeting with Hanzo, leader of Amegakure, is an ambush for Nagato and Yahiko, he and other members try to reach the place to alert and help them. However, they are intercepted by Tobi and Zetsu, who wanted Nagato to go through a traumatic event in order to awaken the Rinnegan from him forever and leave the peaceful goal of Akatsuki’s first formation behind.
Tobi and Zetsu manage to kill Daibutsu and the other members present, achieving their goal and even integrating the second Akatsuki formation, which would be led by Nagato after becoming Pain.
Daibutsu was able to use water release, using his chakra to create giant bubbles that could trap opponents in a kind of water prison.
As a child, Kyūsuke was more aggressive and, along with other colleagues, constantly stole food from villages for a living, after leaving Amegakure to escape Hanzo’s tyranny. When he was older, he joined the 1st Akatsuki formation, always being very reserved, but very dedicated to Yahiko and the goal of the organization.
Kyūsuke turned out to be the one responsible for spreading Akatsuki and his ideals. He was by Daibutsu’s side on the way to the meeting with Hanzo, to alert Nagato and Yahiko about the ambush. He fought with his colleagues when they were intercepted by Tobi and Zetsu. Kyūsuke is killed in battle, along with the other members of the first Akatsuki formation.
He was known as Swiftfoot Kyūsuke for being able to move extremely fast, which gave him advantages in battle. Furthermore, he combined the natures of earth and fire chakra and created a lava ninjutsu, using the lava release technique – lime freezing technique, which can be used to expel a large amount of lime through the mouth.
The last member of the first Akatsuki formation, Kie has always shown loyalty to Yahiko and the goal of the organization.
Little else is known about the warrior, who was with his Akatsuki colleagues when Tobi and Zetsu prevented them from alerting Nagato and Yahiko about the ambush. He died in battle.
Kie’s powers are unknown.
What does the Akatsuki symbol mean?
Akatsuki members could always be seen wearing black uniforms, with dark cloaks in which only a red cloud stood out. The image symbolized the bloody rain that had long fallen on Amegakure, symbolic of the tears and lives lost there due to the Third Shinobi World War.
When he was younger, the founder and first leader, Yahiko, commented on his discontent with the fact that it always rained in Amegakure. When the war began, he linked the phenomenon to his country’s sadness, stating that all his nation did was cry, and that he would one day stop the rain in Amegakure.
Also for that reason, the literal meaning of “Akatsuki” is “dawn”.
What are the rings worn by the members?
Another important symbol used by the members of Akatsuki are the rings, which indicate their affiliation and position within the group, although it has not been made clear what each item represented on the rings means in terms of hierarchy in the team. In total there are 10 rings with the following symbols and colors:
- “Zero” (零, king) / purplish gray: used by Pain, on his right thumb.
- “Blue” (青, ao, shō) / Teal: Used by Deidara, on his right index finger.
- “White” (白, bya) / White: Used by Konan, on the right middle finger.
- “Scarlet” (朱, shu) / Red: Used by Itachi Uchiha, on the right ring finger.
- “Boar Sign” (亥, gai) / Green: Used by Zetsu, to his right little finger.
- “Sky”, “empty” (空, kū) / Slate Blue: Worn by Orochimaru, on his little finger.
- “South” (南, nan) / Yellow: Used by Kisame Hoshigaki, on the left ring finger.
- “North” (北, hoku) / dark green: used by Kakuzu, on the left middle finger.
- “Three” (三, san) / Orange: Used by Hidan, on his left index finger.
- “Jewel” (玉, gyoku) / Purple: Worn by Sasori and later Tobi, on the left thumb.
